Evgeni Malkin Wants to Remain with the Pittsburgh Penguins

Pittsburgh Penguins General Manager Kyle Dubas recently provided an update on the ongoing contract discussions with veteran center Evgeni Malkin. During an appearance on NHL Network's First Shift with EJ Hradek and Dan Rosen, Dubas addressed inquiries about Malkin's status for the upcoming season, acknowledging the unique position of managing iconic, older players.

Dubas emphasized the team's commitment to open communication with Malkin and his agent, JP Barry. While acknowledging Malkin's right to express his views, Dubas explained that the approach to contract negotiations varies among players. He cited the in-season extension of Blake Lizotte as an example of a move made due to market factors and Lizotte's team importance, always prioritizing "what’s best for the Pittsburgh Penguins." However, Dubas also stated that certain players, like Malkin, "deserve to be treated in a very special way and a different way." He confirmed that discussions with Malkin and Barry are ongoing and will continue through the end of the season.

This update follows earlier reports of Malkin expressing frustration about the lack of a contract extension before the offseason, particularly after the Olympic Break. Meetings between Malkin, his agent JP Barry, and Dubas were reportedly scheduled following a March loss to the New York Rangers to discuss his future. Subsequently, after returning from a five-game suspension for high-sticking Rasmus Dahlin, Malkin's outlook on the contract talks appeared more positive.

Following the Penguins' 7-2 victory over the Colorado Avalanche, Malkin confirmed to reporters that Dubas had informed him they would "wait for the summer" to finalize a deal. Malkin expressed his acceptance of this timeline, stating, "I’m OK to that. We have like 15 games left, and I hope playoffs. I want to just play." He further relayed Dubas's assurance: "He asked me if I want to play next year. I say yes. Then he says, ‘Don’t worry, we’ll talk after the season.’ You know, I’m OK. I mean, I feel great. I want to play next year too, maybe two years, who knows. It’s just business."

Malkin has consistently made it clear that retirement is not on his immediate horizon. He wishes to continue playing and, importantly, desires to conclude his illustrious career as a Pittsburgh Penguin.
