Lincoln City Achieves First Second-Tier Win in 65 Years
Lincoln City has achieved their first victory in the second tier of English football in 65 years, thanks to a 66th-minute goal from Ben House. This win, a 1-0 triumph against a previously undefeated Bolton Wanderers, marks a significant milestone for the SkyBet League One champions of last season.
The Imps had faced early setbacks in the Championship, having lost their opening two matches against Middlesbrough and Portsmouth. However, in a hard-fought contest, House's decisive strike secured Lincoln's first three points at this level since April 1961, after Bolton had struggled to break down City's defense.
Goalkeeper George Wickens played a crucial role in Lincoln's success, making a series of vital saves to deny Bolton, who were aiming to build on their opening-day win against Preston and a commendable draw at QPR.
The match itself was a closely contested affair, reflecting the two draws the teams shared last season on their paths to promotion. In the early stages, Bolton enjoyed more possession, with striker Sam Dalby creating the most promising chances. He narrowly missed connecting with a cross from Lincoln's Lewis Brunt and later hit the outside of the post after a well-placed pass from debutant Samuel Iling-Junior.
Lincoln's match-winner, House, had a moment of misjudgment earlier in the game, scuffing a shot and later receiving a yellow card for a diving appeal. Bolton continued to press, with Wickens being tested by a header from defender Brunt and a subsequent effort from John McAtee. Former Lincoln midfielder Ethan Erhahon also went close, but the score remained level at halftime.
Lincoln started the second half with renewed vigor. Ivan Varfolomeev forced Bolton's goalkeeper Jack Bonham into his first save of the match in the 50th minute, following a quick turnover of possession.
After the hour mark, Bolton made a double substitution, introducing Kyliane Dong and Gaizka Larrazabal. Lincoln responded by bringing on Rob Street, and just two minutes later, they found the breakthrough. A long throw from Callum Elder found House, who skillfully headed the ball home from close range.
Dong added impetus to Bolton's attack, forcing Wickens into another save and having a subsequent shot blocked. Despite late pressure from Bolton, including a late chance from substitute Ryan Hardie that Wickens also saved, Lincoln held on. The goalkeeper's heroics continued into stoppage time, as he tipped a 20-yard free-kick from Sheehan over the bar, securing Lincoln's first-ever victory at the Toughsheet Community Stadium and their first away win in Bolton in 42 years.
