Joe Root 'hacked off' by player's off-field incident overshadowing Pakistan victory

England Test captain Joe Root expressed his deep disappointment and frustration following an off-field incident involving fast bowler Brydon Carse, which has overshadowed the team's impressive victory over Pakistan. Despite a resounding win by an innings and 103 runs within three days at Headingley, the focus has shifted due to Carse being handcuffed and led away by police after a team celebration. This incident is the latest in a series of off-field troubles that have plagued English cricket.

Carse has been withdrawn from the squad for the second Test against Pakistan at Lord's, and an investigation by the Cricket Regulator is ongoing. Root stated, "If I'm being brutally honest, I'm really hacked off. I'm really disappointed that after last week's performance we are sat here and we're talking about something not related to it at all." He acknowledged that the regulator is handling the matter and emphasized his primary concern for Carse as a person. Root added that Carse is "very upset and has been very apologetic and understands his actions."

The captain highlighted a pattern of "stupid mistakes away from the game" that detract from the team's on-field achievements. This is not the first such incident, as white-ball captain Harry Brook was injured by a bouncer, opener Ben Duckett was involved in a video appearing to show him drunk, and Stokes and Gus Atkinson were penalized for breaching curfew during a previous series.

Root also spoke about the need for the team to rebuild public trust. "We have an opportunity going forward. Clearly we're not portraying ourselves as we want to. We've got an opportunity to build a culture that is very strong and we can be proud of that's player-driven." He stressed that this rebuilding process will take time and consistent effort, aiming to create a team that supporters can be proud of both on and off the field.
