The National Hockey League is abuzz with general manager searches across several prominent teams. On a recent episode of the 32 Thoughts Podcast, Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet provided insights into the ongoing recruitment processes for the Nashville Predators, Toronto Maple Leafs, and New Jersey Devils.
Nashville Predators GM Search
Friedman reported that Tom Fitzgerald has been added to the list of contenders for the Nashville Predators’ general manager position. Additionally, Jeff Kealty, one of the Predators’ current assistant GMs, reportedly had an in-person interview. However, Friedman believes the Predators are leaning towards an external hire. Despite Fitzgerald’s historical connection as the team’s former captain, his long tenure away makes him an external candidate. While Kealty is not expected to be the chosen one, his interview was reportedly successful, and he may attract interest from other organizations if not hired in Nashville. Friedman also hinted that the Predators might consider Kevyn Adams or Brad Treliving, seeking a GM or AGM with recent experience in such roles. The team’s openness to interviewing Fitzgerald, a unique case due to his captaincy history, suggests a potential interest in others with similar backgrounds.
Regarding other candidates, Friedman corrected previous information, stating that Jamie Langenbrunner did not interview for the role. Bill Scott’s interview, however, garnered positive feedback. Scott White also spoke with the team, though Friedman is unsure if it was an in-person meeting, given White’s Dallas-based location.
Toronto Maple Leafs GM Search
The Toronto Maple Leafs are expected to conduct a series of interviews this week. Friedman’s understanding is that they are initially searching for a single individual. A key factor to remember is that the final structure of the front office is still being determined. The team intends to find a person they are enthusiastic about and then build the organizational framework around them. It’s plausible that multiple candidates interviewed could end up with roles within the front office, but the current focus is on securing one primary individual. Friedman also mentioned that the Maple Leafs may seek permission to speak with additional candidates from the Florida Panthers, possibly including Gregory Campbell.
New Jersey Devils GM Search
The New Jersey Devils are set to commence their general manager search this week. Friedman anticipates that Sunny Mehta and John Chayka will be among the candidates interviewed. He is also curious about the potential involvement of Jamie Langenbrunner. Notably, the Devils are conducting this search internally, without the assistance of an external search firm.
