Mike Perry Warns Chavez Jr About Jake Paul’s ‘Weird’ Power

Sports news » Mike Perry Warns Chavez Jr About Jake Paul’s ‘Weird’ Power

Mike Perry, who recently lost to Jake Paul by knockout after being dropped three times, shared his impressions of the fight and offered a warning to Julio Cesar Chavez Jr regarding Paul`s “weird” power ahead of their upcoming bout.

Perry, who stepped in on short notice for the fight, managed to last five rounds with Paul in a contest the social media star himself described as a “$60 million risk”. Now, Paul is set to face former world champion Chavez Jr on June 28 in California. This matchup is widely considered the most significant test of Paul`s boxing career to date.

Analyzing his own defeat against Paul, Perry explained that the knockdowns he suffered weren`t primarily due to Paul`s raw punching power, but rather his knack for catching opponents off balance. He suggested that a more technically sound boxer like Chavez might possess better balance and potentially avoid similar falls.

Mike Perry Discusses Jake Paul’s Knockout Power

“It was different, it was weird,” Perry stated when describing Paul`s power. He elaborated that Paul`s punches didn`t necessarily cause severe head trauma, but Paul effectively leveraged his weight and size to knock Perry down when he was in an unstable position. Perry noted that he performs better when allowed to utilize an MMA-style striking approach rather than adhering strictly to clean boxing rules.

He conceded that Paul does have power, but believes it stems more from his size, weight, and ability to time shots when an opponent is vulnerable, rather than possessing devastating force. Given that Chavez is closer to Paul in physical size than Perry, the dynamic of the fight could differ. Perry also acknowledged Jake`s developing skills and the strong team supporting him.

Touching on Chavez Jr, Perry recalled seeing him fight on the same card last year against Uriah Hall, a bout where Chavez secured a controversial decision victory despite Hall facing challenges in adapting to a pure boxing format.

Perry highlighted Chavez`s extensive professional boxing experience, boasting nearly 60 fights with over 50 wins. He also mentioned the pressure on Chavez as the son of a legendary boxer. Considering Chavez`s wealth of experience, size (closer to Paul`s fighting weight of 200lbs), and boxing skills, coupled with Paul`s recent trash talk, Perry views the upcoming fight as a significant challenge for Jake Paul. However, he concluded with the common boxing adage: “anything can happen.”
