Merab Dvalishvili has shared a candid perspective on his recent bantamweight title defeat to Petr Yan. In an interview with fellow MMA great Demetrious Johnson, Dvalishvili reflected on his performance at UFC 323, admitting that his training camp may have been too generalized and that he underestimated Yan’s specific preparation.
Dvalishvili, known for his relentless pace and the nickname “The Machine,” acknowledged that even he is not invincible. He stated that while he believes he can overcome most opponents in his weight class, Yan’s unique style and dedicated preparation for their rematch presented a significant challenge. Dvalishvili confessed to making some errors during his training camp, focusing heavily on general grappling and pushing his limits without tailoring his approach precisely for Yan.
The fighter also revealed that in their second encounter, his attempts to secure submissions were met with Yan’s resilience, and a failed submission attempt ultimately led to Yan gaining the upper hand with takedowns and impactful strikes. This tactical disadvantage, Dvalishvili suggests, played a crucial role in the outcome of the fight.
Despite a recent training injury where he broke his nose, Dvalishvili has opted against immediate surgery, choosing to address it only after his fighting career concludes. Meanwhile, Petr Yan has already recovered from his own surgery and is back in training, fueling anticipation for a potential trilogy fight later this year.
Dvalishvili’s Candid Confession
During the interview, Dvalishvili elaborated on his mindset leading up to the loss: “My nickname is Machine, but I’m human being sometimes. Against Petr, I think also what happened was that I think I can beat everybody that day, maybe except Petr. Because Petr was really training for me. And his style is different, and he’s this tough, tough fighter. Everybody else, I think I can beat. Any striker or any other fighter in my weight class except Petr… I made some mistakes during training camp… I was just doing my thing, pushing the limit, and just doing a lot of grappling rounds.”
