According to The Athletic, MLS club Chicago Fire has emerged as the new frontrunner to sign Kevin De Bruyne this summer when his contract with Manchester City expires. The Fire, who have significantly improved under head coach and general manager Gregg Berhalter, previously sought a major signing after being linked to Neymar and now look to secure the Belgian star.
The Belgian star announced in April that this season would be his last with Manchester City, where he has been a crucial player. Following the season`s end, his services are highly sought after globally. While initially linked with San Diego FC, his discovery rights were later transferred to Inter Miami. However, adding De Bruyne would be challenging for the Herons given they already have their three designated player spots filled.
This situation has given the Chicago Fire the priority in negotiating with De Bruyne, hoping to add him to their roster. Other MLS teams like D.C. United and New York City FC have also reportedly shown interest, though D.C. might be prioritizing a move for Paul Pogba at present.
While discovery rights grant the Fire exclusive negotiation power, it doesn`t guarantee De Bruyne will join MLS. Clubs from Saudi Arabia are reportedly interested, and there remains a possibility he could sign with another Premier League side.
Despite currently sitting 11th in the Eastern Conference, the Fire are only two points away from a playoff position. Their star striker, Hugo Cuypers, is leading the MLS Golden Boot race with seven goals in 10 matches. Under Berhalter`s guidance, the team is on an upward trajectory, and securing De Bruyne could elevate them into MLS Cup contention.
