LONDON — Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta is dealing with two injury worries as they prepare for the second leg of their Champions League quarterfinal against Real Madrid on Wednesday. Thomas Partey and Jorginho both had to leave Arsenal`s recent 1-1 draw with Brentford due to injuries.
Partey was taken off the field in the 69th minute soon after scoring a goal. It seemed to be a muscle problem. Arteta mentioned that Partey `felt something` but didn`t give more details.
Jorginho also came off shortly after, looking uncomfortable. Arsenal played with 10 men for the last few minutes of the game.
Arteta said about Jorginho, `He said he couldn`t breathe well, possibly related to his ribs. It`s unusual for Jorgi to stop playing, so it might be serious.`
Arteta was less clear about Partey`s situation. `He felt something, so we didn`t want to risk it,` he said. `We`re unsure if he`ll be available for Wednesday. The doctors will check him and let us know.`
Losing either Partey or Jorginho, especially Partey, would be a significant problem for Arsenal before playing Real Madrid. Being without both would be a bigger issue, as they are key midfield players. Although Declan Rice could play deeper in midfield, this would create other problems.
These midfield injuries are not the only concerns. Ben White also missed the Brentford game due to a training injury. Arteta said, `He wasn`t fit to be in the squad today. We have a few days to see if he recovers.`
Injuries have been a problem for Arsenal this season. Martin Odegaard and Bukayo Saka have both been out for periods.
