Igli Tare on Pulisic and Musah’s Roles at AC Milan

Sports news » Igli Tare on Pulisic and Musah’s Roles at AC Milan

AC Milan`s sporting director, Igli Tare, appointed this summer to initiate a new era at the club, recently addressed the media regarding the upcoming season and transfer activities. He specifically commented on American international players Yunus Musah and Christian Pulisic. This new phase follows a challenging previous season and coincides with the return of Massimiliano Allegri as head coach. Allegri previously managed Milan from 2010 to 2014, winning the Serie A title in the 2010-11 season.

Regarding Musah, who is currently in discussions about potentially leaving the Rossoneri this summer, Tare clarified the situation.

Tare stated, “I consider Musah an excellent player. However, we are seeking players with characteristics that align with the project we are developing with coach Allegri. Specifically, for our three-man midfield, we require deep-lying midfielders. Musah does not possess these particular traits. He can play in a two or three-man midfield, but with different qualities. This is the primary reason we are exploring different options.”

Tare also outlined the club`s general transfer strategy, adding, “We are planning to add another midfielder, alongside a striker. We will sign a right back and a left back. Should any sales occur, we will also look to strengthen the winger and central defense positions. The same applies to attacking wingers. Our focus must be on doing what is best for the team and aiming to be key players in competitions.”

While Musah`s future at the Italian club appears uncertain post-summer, Christian Pulisic`s situation is notably different. Both Tare and Allegri regard the American winger as fundamental to the team`s plans. Tare commented on Pulisic: “Pulisic will be a key player for the next season. I will discuss his contract renewal with club CEO Giorgio Furlani at the appropriate time, but currently, our complete focus is on the team. I believe he was one of our most impactful players last season and is set to be one of the cornerstones for the upcoming campaign; he holds a central role within this group.”

Over his two seasons at AC Milan, Musah showcased versatility by playing various midfield roles, including central and right-central, and occasionally even as an attacking winger or right back. While this adaptability contributed to him playing 80 games, it seemed to prevent him from solidifying a regular, key role within the squad. In contrast, Pulisic was a standout performer, contributing 17 goals and 12 assists across 49 appearances in all competitions. He was undoubtedly one of the best players for the Italian giants last season. However, heading towards the 2026 World Cup in his home country, the article notes that *not playing European tournaments with his club* is not what the American international needed.
