George Russell has stated that it`s completely understandable for Mercedes to consider signing Max Verstappen, the current world champion.
Russell himself is nearing the end of his Mercedes contract, and despite his consistent strong performances, an extension is still pending, fueling speculation about driver movements within the team.
Toto Wolff, Mercedes` team principal, previously mentioned pausing efforts to recruit Verstappen. However, with the uncertainty surrounding Verstappen`s position at Red Bull and Russell`s contract situation, the possibility remains a hot topic.
Speaking before the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix, Russell told PA, “Why wouldn`t they want Verstappen? It`s completely logical. He`s the top driver right now, a four-time world champion. This isn`t a reflection on me or Kimi Antonelli. Every team has two drivers, and he`s undoubtedly a desirable option.”
Russell dismisses any personal concern over these potential moves, emphasizing his performance-based approach. “My performance speaks for itself, and I believe I`m currently performing at the highest level on the grid.”
Speculation about Verstappen`s future intensified after Red Bull advisor Helmut Marko expressed worries to Sky Germany about Verstappen potentially leaving if Red Bull doesn`t improve their car`s performance following the Bahrain Grand Prix.
Verstappen himself has downplayed these concerns, stating his focus is on improving Red Bull`s car and questioning why Marko would suggest such worries about his future.
Russell is currently enjoying a strong 2025 season, achieving three podium finishes in the first four races, placing him only 14 points behind Lando Norris in the championship standings. This continues his strong performance from 2024, where he often outperformed Lewis Hamilton.
Addressing contract talks, Russell said, “I`m very content. Many drivers have contracts, but ultimately, performance dictates everything. If you underperform, teams will find ways to make changes. We`ll discuss contracts when the timing is right.”
He added, “Those overly concerned about contract security often lack self-belief. I have immense confidence in my abilities. Having been teammates with a world champion, arguably the greatest of all time, for three years, I believe I can beat anyone given the right opportunity. That`s my driving force.”

Russell: Some Rumors `Reasonably Close` to Truth
Recent reports suggest Russell is nearing a two-year contract extension with Mercedes, possibly with an option for a further year.
When questioned about these rumors, Russell commented, “Rumors are rarely completely accurate. While some are somewhat close to the truth, contract discussions usually don`t begin until May or June in a season.”
He further explained his perspective on long-term contracts in Formula 1, stating that exit and performance clauses are common, making long-term deals less significant than they might seem. He emphasized the performance-driven nature of the sport, where consistent high-level driving is paramount.
