The Golf Travel Writers of America (GTWA) has announced a significant leadership change, naming George McNeilly as its new president.

GTWA serves as a professional organization for media professionals—including writers, editors, and broadcasters—who focus on golf destinations and the wider golf industry. Its core mission is to uphold journalistic excellence, facilitate the sharing of industry knowledge, and offer credible, captivating coverage of golf experiences globally.

McNeilly emphasized the unique value of independent media: “The credibility and authenticity offered by third-party working media members, who have no vested interest in the success or failure of a golf course, resort, or sporting event, are unmatched by press releases or agency content.” He added, “It’s paramount for our members to honor the organization’s rich history and legacy.”

Established 21 years ago, GTWA began as a passion project by co-founders Bruce Vittner and John Edwards, who sought to create a dedicated platform for golf writers traveling the world.

McNeilly observed the evolving media landscape: “The environment continues to transform rapidly, as most reliable storytellers in media centers or on assignment are no longer full-time employees. I’m not sure businesses seeking broader exposure fully grasp the reduction in staff and budgets at news organizations, nor do they truly appreciate the extensive reach and commitment of our members.”

For eligible media professionals, membership offers substantial advantages, including access to a network of seasoned colleagues, opportunities for teamwork, professional growth, and enhanced visibility within a dedicated community focused on their craft. It also fosters connections between writers and industry partners, tourism boards, and destinations.

“This positions GTWA as an ideal environment for professional development, staying informed, and strengthening one’s standing in the golf media sector,” McNeilly stated. “Every endeavor begins with dialogue, and we aspire to be perceived as something akin to a ‘Seal of Approval’ for those who travel and report on a sport we all deeply value.”

This year’s transition involved updating the bylaws and adopting a clearer mission statement: “To inform and engage golf enthusiasts and participants with integrity wherever the sport is played, watched, attended, written about, or visited.”

While some members suggested a new name for the organization, the proposal was quickly dismissed by the majority.

McNeilly affirmed the name’s relevance: “We will always be involved in activities that include writing. Therefore, ‘The Golf Travel Writers of America’ is even more pertinent today, as we distribute content across emerging platforms to a wider audience than ever before.”

Incoming Vice President Alan Darty, publisher of Golf One Media, led a team in redesigning the association’s website. The goal was to better serve its expanding membership, which now includes broadcasters, podcasters, and credible influencers who share the organization’s mission.

Darty commented, “The website now serves as a central hub for golf-related businesses to discover the high-quality work of our members and establish connections with them.”

The GTWA executive committee comprises George McNeilly (President), Alan Darty (Vice President), Dan Vukelich (Secretary), Joy Sarver (Treasurer), and the original writer as president emeritus. The organization’s headquarters are located in Orlando, FL.

McNeilly’s extensive professional background is expected to greatly benefit the organization. For the past 14 years, he has taught Sports Business at Full Sail University, while also regularly contributing articles on professional golf, relevant destinations, and products.

Prior to this, he spent over a decade as a senior executive at ESPN. His career began as an acclaimed multimedia broadcaster, producer, and writer, with experience covering four Olympic Games across three continents, 17 Super Bowls, and numerous major golf tournaments.

“We aim to be both welcoming and selective,” McNeilly explained. “Given that so many individuals are now multimedia contributors, we must remain aware of this trend. Our message continues to resonate. There are many opportunities for our members to provide value to the audiences and stakeholders we serve.”
