Former Gym Mates Renato Moicano and Chris Duncan Set for UFC Main Event Showdown

Sports news » Former Gym Mates Renato Moicano and Chris Duncan Set for UFC Main Event Showdown

Renato Moicano and Chris Duncan, who have trained together for years at American Top Team, will step into the octagon as adversaries this Saturday night. Their lightweight main event bout at UFC Vegas 115 is scheduled for April 4, 2026, at the newly rebranded Meta APEX facility in Las Vegas, Nevada. This high-stakes encounter sees Moicano defending his position in the rankings against his surging gym mate, Duncan, who is seeking his inaugural marquee victory.

Renato Moicano vs. Chris Duncan: The Matchup

This headlining bout, dubbed UFC Fight Night: Moicano vs. Duncan, marks UFC Vegas 115. Moicano, a long-standing ATT veteran and contender, has been part of the esteemed gym since 2017. He transitioned to the lightweight division in 2020, accumulating significant wins over notable opponents such as Jalin Turner, Benoit Saint Denis, Calvin Kattar, and Cub Swanson. Duncan, a Scottish lightweight with an impressive 15-2 professional record, also considers ATT his training home and is coming off a submission victory against Terrance McKinney in December 2025.

Moicano enters this fight after a challenging 2025, which saw him suffer back-to-back losses: a first-round submission to Islam Makhachev in January and a decision defeat to Beneil Dariush in June. In contrast, Duncan has rebuilt his momentum since a 2024 submission loss to Manuel Torres, securing victories including a first-round guillotine choke over Bolaji Oki in 2024 and his finish of McKinney last year.

The American Top Team Dilemma

During fight week, both competitors addressed the unusual situation of facing a training partner. Duncan articulated that the strong bond forged within American Top Team extends into fight night, even as they aim to overcome each other’s ambitions. He emphasized their mutual respect and understanding of the competitive nature of the sport.

Duncan commented, “He was in the same gym, and we were in the sauna together… a lot of people don’t understand what Mo and I are doing. We have so much respect for each other that it’s just going to be fighting… Whoever wins, wins, and people can’t grasp that… people aren’t built like me; I’m on a different level.”

Moicano offered insights into ATT’s internal stance, explaining that owner Dan Lambert and the coaching staff typically try to prevent teammates from fighting each other. However, he acknowledged that with so many elite fighters under one roof, such confrontations are often unavoidable. He used flyweights Kyoji Horiguchi and Alexandre Pantoja as an example of teammates who might eventually have to compete against each other for significant stakes.

Moicano stated, “The gym always tries to avoid this situation. Dan Lambert and all the coaches want to avoid it as much as possible because it’s not ideal for people from the same gym to fight. But sometimes you have no choice, especially in terms of career progression. I was out for a year, and they offered me this main event opportunity, while Chris Duncan wants to break into the rankings. So, it was beneficial for everyone involved, though not ideal for the gym. I tell the fighters, you don’t want to fight another guy from your gym, but it can happen, you never know. At ATT, you have guys like Kyoji Horiguchi and Pantoja, who are the best at 125, and eventually, they’ll fight each other. Sometimes you have to fight your teammates, and it’s tough.” He added, “Training under the same roof as Chris was a bit different because I never thought I’d fight someone from American Top Team, but it happens, and I just have to be professional. I respect him, I have nothing against him; I just want to win. I want to win that fight, and there’s no bad blood at all.”

Duncan, for his part, highlighted the clear-cut nature of this matchup: two teammates, sharing the same gym, but preparing in separate camps, with a shared understanding that the fight’s outcome will define their standing in the lightweight hierarchy the following day. Both fighters maintain that their friendship will endure beyond the battle in Las Vegas, but both concede that the fight itself must take priority.
