Football icon David Beckham, co-owner of Inter Miami and a Manchester United legend, lauded Arsenal for their dominant victory over Real Madrid in the Champions League. He acknowledged the significance of having an English team advance to the competition`s semi-finals.
Arsenal`s commanding 5-1 aggregate triumph against Real Madrid marked their first semi-final appearance since 2009. They are also the first English club to reach this stage since Manchester City`s Champions League victory two years prior. Despite his past affiliations with Real Madrid, Manchester United, and Paris Saint-Germain (Arsenal`s next opponent), Beckham expressed his admiration for the Gunners, partly due to his son`s strong support for the club.
“It`s fantastic to see an English team in the semi-finals,” Beckham stated on UEFA Champions League Today. “If Arsenal progresses to the final by defeating PSG, it would be a remarkable achievement for the club, manager Mikel Arteta, and the team, given their Champions League performances this season. My son is a big fan, so I wish them well, but facing PSG, my support will be for Paris on that night. However, I always want English teams to succeed in this prestigious competition.”
Beckham also commended Arsenal`s performance in both legs against Real Madrid, despite it creating a slightly divided household with his Arsenal-supporting son and his friend.
“Many anticipated a Real Madrid comeback,” Beckham commented, recalling pre-match discussions in Madrid. “But in reality, Arsenal deserved the win over the two legs. Their performance was complete – exceptional individual brilliance, strong teamwork, and excellent management by Mikel Arteta. While a Madrid comeback was expected, it wasn`t to be. Arsenal controlled the game effectively, with outstanding defensive displays and standout performances from players like Declan Rice and Bukayo Saka, particularly in the away leg.”
Beckham is set to appear on `Beckham and Friends Live,` an alternative broadcast on Paramount+ for the Champions League semi-finals and final. Hosted by Kate Scott, it will feature Beckham and guests during the later stages of the tournament. The first two shows will be in London for the semi-final second legs on May 6th and 7th, followed by the final in Munich on May 31st.
Beckham hinted at enjoying the show with friends, wine, and insightful conversation.
