Conor McGregor acknowledged his teammate`s achievement despite their previous social media conflict.
It seems becoming a champion in two weight classes in the UFC, like Conor McGregor once did, is increasingly difficult, as seen with Ilia Topuria recently vacating his featherweight title.
While McGregor might be considering a move to BKFC instead of fighting in the UFC again, his historic win at UFC 205, where he held both featherweight and lightweight titles, remains a significant achievement.
Known for sharing his opinions on social media about major fights, McGregor doesn`t shy away from expressing himself, even if it ruffles feathers.
Recently, when one of his former training partners achieved the status of a two-division champion by winning a second world title, McGregor, despite their complex history, offered his congratulations.
Conor McGregor`s Three-Word Congratulation to Will Fleury
Will Fleury, representing Ireland, had to rebuild his career after a setback in PFL due to a positive drug test.
The 35-year-old joined the European OKTAGON promotion and quickly made an impact with consecutive victories, eventually winning the light heavyweight title in December.
Following the previous heavyweight champion leaving the promotion, Fleury was given the opportunity to compete for the vacant heavyweight title at OKTAGON 68 on March 8.
Despite facing challenges, Fleury emerged victorious after five rounds, becoming a two-division champion within just 11 months.
Fleury trained at SBG Dublin under John Kavanagh, the same gym where Conor McGregor honed his skills.
The two fighters had previously engaged in a public disagreement on social media regarding political issues in Ireland, specifically concerning immigration, before Fleury joined OKTAGON.
In a social media post, McGregor had criticized Fleury, even suggesting he should be removed from SBG Dublin after his PFL departure.
However, Fleury, who now playfully references McGregor`s comments in his social media bio, received a brief but positive message from ‘The Mac’ in response to his championship win in Germany.
McGregor`s message simply read: “Fair f—— play!”
Will Fleury Defended Paul Hughes Amidst McGregor`s Criticism
Conor McGregor`s recent public disagreement also involved Irish fighter Paul Hughes, following Hughes` Bellator lightweight title fight against Usman Nurmagomedov.
McGregor strongly criticized Hughes` interaction with Khabib Nurmagomedov`s cousin, believing Hughes wasn`t properly representing Ireland.
In response to McGregor`s harsh words, Hughes offered a classy reply. Fleury then defended Hughes, praising him as a “fantastic representative of Irish MMA” after Hughes` impressive fight in Dubai in January.
While the public feud has quieted down, it remains uncertain whether the issues between McGregor and Fleury, or McGregor and Hughes, have been fully resolved.
