During a recent appearance on The Breakfast Club, Charlamagne tha God confronted UFC President Dana White on several critical issues. White, initially there to discuss UFC Freedom 250, an event scheduled at the White House on President Trump’s birthday, found himself in a heated exchange when Charlamagne delved into White’s long-standing friendship with Donald Trump.
Charlamagne Questions White’s Support for Trump Amidst Criticisms
White defended his personal friendship with Trump, crediting him with supporting the UFC in its nascent stages by hosting events at his Atlantic City casinos. However, Charlamagne highlighted Trump’s high disapproval rating, linking it to the Iran war, escalating tariffs, inflation impacting household goods, a 9% increase in utility bills, and challenges in healthcare access following changes to the Affordable Care Act. He pressed White on why he wouldn’t publicly address these issues with his friend. White countered by stating he witnesses Trump’s positive actions firsthand and expressed confidence that history would judge his presidency favorably.
Charlamagne intensified his questioning, accusing White of being a “glazer” – a sycophant – to Trump. White refuted this, claiming no one had ever labeled him as such. Co-host Loren LoRosa suggested that White’s association with Trump could sway young male voters in 2024, to which White responded positively. Charlamagne then drew a line connecting White’s perceived support for Trump’s policies to the struggles faced by fans, asking if White felt responsible for high tariffs, inflation, and cuts to healthcare. White dismissively responded with sarcasm, “I guess if that’s the way you wanna look at it, it’s my fault.”
Fighter Pay and Unionization Discussed
The conversation then pivoted to fighter compensation. Charlamagne questioned how White justifies accumulating billions in personal wealth while some UFC fighters reportedly hold second jobs. White likened their situation to that of athletes in minor league baseball or basketball, emphasizing the need to persevere until they achieve top-tier success. “I’m sure some basketball players and baseball players also still need second jobs until they reach the top,” he stated.
Regarding unionization, Charlamagne noted the UFC’s perceived adversarial stance towards such efforts. White clarified that fighters are free to unionize if they wish, asserting that the decision is not his to make. He added that the organization has always engaged with representative groups for talent and that they do not view unionization as an inherent threat. “We don’t act like that’s the enemy. If the fighters wanted to unionize that’s up to them,” he explained.
White Addresses Past Altercation
Charlamagne also brought up White’s widely publicized altercation with his wife, Anne, on New Year’s Eve in 2022. Video footage showed Anne slapping White first after he grabbed her wrist, followed by White retaliating before others intervened. Both parties attributed the incident to excessive alcohol consumption, and no charges were filed, with White retaining his position. Charlamagne inquired whether White believed his status as the boss shielded him from severe repercussions. White denied this, calling it the “worst thing possible” and acknowledging the public stigma, admitting it contradicted his earlier stance against a man striking a woman.
White described himself as a centrist with liberal leanings, despite being labeled as far-right due to his Trump affiliation. He maintained that politics are kept separate from the UFC, while still defending his friendship with the former president. The interview quickly gained traction online, with clips circulating widely on social media platforms, and many fans applauded Charlamagne’s direct and probing approach.
