UFC Hall of Famer Chael Sonnen has offered his perspective on the circumstances that could lead to Michael Chandler’s retirement in 2026.
Chandler is set to face Mauricio Ruffy on June 14 at an event dubbed UFC Freedom 250, reportedly taking place on the South Lawn of the White House. The 39-year-old fighter initially expressed a strong desire to complete his rivalry with Conor McGregor following their stint as coaches on TUF 31. However, UFC President Dana White had alternative plans for “Iron” and has indicated that a McGregor vs. Chandler bout in 2026 is no longer a possibility.
Currently grappling with a three-fight losing streak, and having lost five of his last six UFC appearances, Chandler now prepares to take on the formidable and rapidly rising knockout artist, Ruffy. Oddsmakers are already suggesting that the 29-year-old Brazilian poses a significant challenge, with many believing Chandler faces an uphill battle.
Chael Sonnen’s Insights on Chandler’s Potential Retirement
Chael Sonnen firmly believes that if Michael Chandler does not emerge victorious at UFC Freedom 250, he might choose to hang up his gloves. In a recent video posted on his YouTube channel, Sonnen elaborated that while “Iron” still harbors ambitions of becoming a UFC champion, achieving an undisputed title at 39 years old, especially after four consecutive potential setbacks, increasingly feels like an unattainable dream. Consequently, if Chandler is defeated by Mauricio Ruffy on June 14, retirement could be his next step. Sonnen stated:
“Chandler will retire if Ruffy beats him. He likely will, and I do not know if it will necessarily be his choice. Chandler is now 38 years old. Chandler is also gainfully employed by Paramount and is going to be part of the announcing team. And should he lose a fight, that would probably just be a point in Chandler’s career. Chandler’s one of those guys who still wants to be a world champion. So if he gets confronted with that’s just not in your future… He likely would say, ‘Fair enough. Give my spot to somebody else.'”
