Center or Defense: What Will the Philadelphia Flyers Prioritize?

Sports news » Center or Defense: What Will the Philadelphia Flyers Prioritize?

This offseason, the Philadelphia Flyers face a crucial decision: will they prioritize strengthening their center position or their defense corps? According to Anthony Di Marco of the Daily Faceoff, who spoke on Sirius XM NHL Network Radio’s TFP Hotstove, the Flyers are indeed looking closely at the center position.

While the team has experimented with players like Denver Barkey down the middle and has utilized Trevor Zegras at center in the past, Zegras has more recently been playing on the wing alongside Christian Dvorak. Di Marco believes the Flyers will likely prioritize acquiring a center, though he acknowledges the difficulty of this task, as many teams are in need of a top-six center.

Di Marco suggests that the need for a “power play quarterback” on the blue line is also significant. However, the defense position comes with its own set of considerations. The Flyers need to negotiate a new contract for Jamie Drysdale and have long-term financial commitments to Travis Sanheim. Cam York is also in the early years of a five-year deal, potentially requiring some roster adjustments on the backend.

Ultimately, Di Marco’s conversations suggest that acquiring a center is the more probable route for the Flyers this offseason. The success of this pursuit will heavily depend on what becomes available on the trade market, especially with a rising salary cap and limited options in free agency on July 1st, which could lead to an increase in trade activity.

It’s worth noting that both Trevor Zegras and Jamie Drysdale are restricted free agents requiring new contracts. The Flyers also have limited goaltending depth, with only Dan Vladar currently signed. This raises questions about how much salary cap flexibility they will truly have, particularly when considering Zegras’s role as a winger rather than a center, and Drysdale’s upcoming contract.

After reaching the second round of the playoffs, it’s evident that the Flyers are still a few years and key acquisitions away from being true contenders. The need for help down the middle is clear, but the path to achieving it remains to be seen.
