Two-time World Rally champion Carlos Sainz Sr. has emerged as a potential challenger to incumbent Mohammed Ben Sulayem for the presidency of the FIA in the December 2025 election.
Sainz Sr., aged 63 and father of Formula 1 driver Carlos Sainz, is understood to be the significant candidate widely rumoured to be preparing a campaign against Ben Sulayem. Reports suggest he has considerable support from executives across various motorsport disciplines governed by the FIA.
Confirming his interest, Sainz told Autosport this week that he is contemplating putting himself forward.
He cited his extensive 40-year career in motorsport as a key motivator, explaining, “This sport has given me everything.” He feels the timing might be right for him to step up and contribute back. He expressed confidence in his ability to lead effectively and assemble a capable team to strengthen and develop motorsport and the automotive world.

Regarding potential conflicts of interest arising from his son`s F1 career, Sainz Sr. is not concerned. He stated his intention to delegate relevant matters and step away from his involvement in his son`s career. He stressed that his established reputation means people understand this wouldn`t be an issue and that the FIA is a serious body where conflict would be avoided. An unnamed senior figure in Formula 1 reportedly praised Sainz Sr.`s integrity as “irreproachable,” viewing him as a highly plausible candidate.
Mohammed Ben Sulayem, elected president in late 2021, is seeking another term despite his tenure being marked by controversy. The organisation has seen significant changes in senior personnel, notably the recent resignation of Deputy President for Sport Robert Reid, who cited concerns about the FIA`s governance direction under Ben Sulayem.
Ben Sulayem has also faced criticism from drivers over stricter penalties for misconduct and swearing. Drivers, including George Russell and Lewis Hamilton, have called for more influence in the sport`s governance.
Sainz Sr. is reported to favor a more collaborative approach, particularly aiming to work closely with drivers and grant the Grand Prix Drivers` Association (GDPA) greater input into rule-making.
The FIA presidential election is scheduled during the next general assembly in Uzbekistan on December 12, 2025.
