Carlos Prates Declares Islam Makhachev the GOAT and Targets Title Shot

Sports news » Carlos Prates Declares Islam Makhachev the GOAT and Targets Title Shot

Carlos Prates is confident that a victory over Jack Della Maddalena at UFC Perth this weekend will secure him a title shot in his next outing.

Currently on a two-fight winning streak with consecutive knockout victories, Prates aims to defeat another former champion and then challenge the reigning UFC welterweight kingpin.

Reports suggest that Islam Makhachev is slated to defend his 170-pound title in August against Ian Machado Garry.

Following his upcoming fight, if successful, Prates expressed his desire to face the winner of the Makhachev vs. Garry bout. Interestingly, Prates hopes Garry emerges victorious, as the two fighters have a history. Last year, Garry handed Prates his first UFC loss in a well-executed short-notice fight.

Prates is eager for a rematch with Garry, preferably in Brazil, a sentiment that both fighters have mutually agreed upon.

Speaking at UFC Perth Media Day, Prates stated:

“I believe Islam and Ian are scheduled to fight in August, and I will face the winner. Islam is currently considered the GOAT. He is a dominant two-division UFC champion with formidable wrestling, making him an incredibly difficult opponent.”

In a subsequent interview with MMA Junkie, Prates reiterated his claim:

“I will be the next contender after August. Islam is set to fight Ian at UFC 330, and afterward, I will face the winner.”
