Carlos Prates is eager for a rematch with welterweight contender Ian Machado Garry later this year. Currently, Prates is slated to face Jack Della Maddalena at UFC Perth in May.

Prates and Garry previously fought in April, where Garry emerged victorious on short notice, ending Prates’ undefeated streak in the UFC. However, Prates quickly rebounded from this setback, securing consecutive knockout wins against Geoff Neal and Leon Edwards.

Prates believes that following his knockout victory over Edwards, and with another potential knockout win against Jack Della Maddalena next month, he deserves the next welterweight title shot.

Carlos Prates’ Strategy: Garry vs. Makhachev and a Brazilian Rematch

The reigning UFC lightweight champion, Islam Makhachev, is expected to face Ian Machado Garry in August. Prates stated he will be supporting Garry in this potential bout, hoping for an upset that would lead to a rematch between himself and Garry for the belt.

During a recent interview, Prates outlined this plan: “I think that beating a former champion for the second time in a row and by knockout will lock in the title shot. Then there’s no one else for them to give the fight to but me.” He dismissed other potential contenders, emphasizing his own impressive record.

Prates also indicated his desire for a recovery period after the Jack Della Maddalena fight before commencing training for a title bout. In the interim, he wants Garry to secure the championship from Makhachev.

“I would rather let Ian Garry fight for the belt and then we will see what happens and I fight later… I am rooting for [the belt] to change [hands] so Ian Garry and I can have our rematch for the belt,” Prates explained. He revealed that Garry had contacted him recently, and they have agreed on a path forward: “I beat Maddalena, he beats Makhachev, and then we do our rematch here in Brazil.”
