Concacaf has announced a two-game suspension for Canada`s head coach, Jesse Marsch. This penalty comes as a result of his conduct during the Concacaf Nations League finals in March. Marsch was given a red card in the third-place match against the U.S. men`s national team.
During Canada`s 2-1 victory over the USMNT, Marsch was ejected in the second half. His dismissal followed an outburst directed at the referee, which included him entering the playing field. He was made to watch the rest of the game from the stands and will be absent for the first two games this summer. This suspension is the result of a disciplinary review by the North American soccer confederation.
According to a statement from Concacaf, the Disciplinary Committee initially imposed a one-match suspension for Marsch`s unacceptable behavior towards match officials and for delaying the match restart by refusing to leave the field. This has been extended to a two-match suspension, which includes the automatic one-match suspension for the red card. Concacaf also warned both the Canadian Soccer Association and Mr. Marsch that future incidents could lead to even stricter penalties.
Marsch will be absent for Canada`s first two matches at the Concacaf Gold Cup, starting in June. Canada begins their tournament on June 17 against Honduras at BC Place in Vancouver, and will then play Curacao on June 21 at Shell Energy Stadium in Houston.
