Bruce Cassidy’s Demanding Style: A Look at His Second NHL Firing

Sports news ยป Bruce Cassidy’s Demanding Style: A Look at His Second NHL Firing

For the second time in his coaching career, Bruce Cassidy has been dismissed as an NHL head coach. His initial departure was from the Boston Bruins in the summer of 2022. He was then swiftly recruited by the Vegas Golden Knights, who themselves had just parted ways with their coach, Peter DeBoer, during the same offseason.

Cassidy arrived in Vegas with a strong reputation, having guided the Bruins to within one game of the Stanley Cup in 2019. The Golden Knights, already a talented roster, were seeking a coach to push them to championship levels. In his first season, Cassidy delivered, leading the team to a Stanley Cup victory. However, since then, despite maintaining a 60% win rate, the team’s performance has reportedly declined.

Regardless of whether the issues stemmed from roster construction, goaltending inconsistencies, or other factors, the Vegas Golden Knights were not meeting expectations. Consequently, General Manager Kelly McCrimmon determined that a change was necessary. This situation prompts an important question: did Cassidy lose the locker room, or were deeper issues at play?

As noted by hockey insider Elliotte Friedman on the ’32 Thoughts Podcast’ and various other platforms, Bruce Cassidy is known as a demanding coach who expects a lot from his players. Friedman suggested that underlying tension within the team had been present since Cassidy’s arrival.

Friedman elaborated, indicating that while Cassidy is a highly capable coach, his intense approach tends to wear on players after a few seasons. He specifically recalled a highly tense meeting between Cassidy and several players before Game 5 of last year’s playoff series against Edmonton, which reportedly strained their relationships. While some players appreciated Cassidy’s directness, others conveyed their concerns to management. Despite initial management support for Cassidy, it became evident this season, and recognized by Vegas management, that his message was no longer resonating, and the strength of player relationships had diminished, signaling that it was simply time for a change.

As with any player-coach dynamic, relationships can inevitably deteriorate. At a recent media briefing, McCrimmon publicly stated that Cassidy had not “lost the room,” but rather that the team had experienced a loss of energy and spirit. Players largely echoed this sentiment, though captain Mark Stone specifically described the locker room atmosphere as “stale.”

Interestingly, Cassidy’s replacement, John Tortorella, is also renowned for his demanding coaching style. This suggests that sometimes a fresh voice delivering a similar, high-expectations message can be what’s needed to re-energize a team and ignite the competitive spirit required for winning.

This marks the second occasion where Cassidy’s coaching methods have reportedly led to player discontent. Nevertheless, given his distinguished track record, it is widely expected that Bruce Cassidy will quickly secure another coaching opportunity elsewhere.
