Gotham FC, Orlando Pride, and the NWSL have voiced their support for Barbra Banda after a “hateful language” incident during Gotham FC`s home opener against Orlando Pride on Sunday.
Gotham FC stated they are aware of an incident involving hateful language directed at Barbra Banda during Sunday`s match. The club emphasized unity with the NWSL and Orlando Pride, stating that such behavior is unacceptable and has no place in the league or stadiums.
According to Gotham FC, stadium security responded swiftly to the reported incident, directly addressing the individual and monitoring the situation for the remainder of the match. Gotham FC and the NWSL are collaborating to further investigate the incident and consider additional actions under the league`s Fan Code of Conduct.
Orlando Pride and the league also released messages of support for Banda and outlined further steps to be taken.
A Delayed Response to Continued Abuse
Gotham FC mentioned reaching out to Orlando Pride leaders on Monday to offer apologies and support. However, this marks the first public statement of support from the league since Banda experienced extensive online bullying in November, following her BBC Women`s Footballer of the Year award.
The online abuse included attacks from figures like J.K. Rowling, who criticized the BBC`s award and alluded to misgendering Banda, stating it was more time efficient than spitting in women`s faces.
Orlando Pride, the NWSL Players Association, and NWSLPA executive director Meghann Burke expressed support for Banda shortly after the online bullying began. Burke directly addressed Rowling, defending Banda and asserting the NWSLPA`s collective support.
What`s Next
The abusive rhetoric has now transitioned from online platforms to NWSL games, occurring months after a perceived lack of protection for Banda outside of the players` union.
Barbra Banda is a 2024 NWSL MVP finalist, reigning NWSL Shield winner, and NWSL Champion. Her prominence grew after impressive performances with Zambia during the Olympics and subsequent titles in the NWSL, leading to racist and transphobic online abuse after receiving the BBC award.
Gotham FC reported that the fan using abusive language was addressed by security and monitored, but not dismissed from the stadium.
Orlando Pride is scheduled to host San Diego Wave FC on Saturday at Inter & Co Stadium.
