Real Madrid`s 3-1 victory over Pachuca in the Club World Cup was marred by a significant incident occurring deep into stoppage time. Real Madrid defender Antonio Rudiger has alleged that he was racially abused by Pachuca defender Gustavo Cabral during the match.
Rudiger promptly brought the matter to the attention of the referee, Ramon Abatti. In response, Abatti executed FIFA`s designated protocol gesture—an `X` signal—specifically used to indicate an alleged racial incident.
Following the game, Pachuca coach Jaime Lozono commented on the situation. He confirmed that the FIFA protocol had been activated and an official investigation was being initiated. Lozono stated, “Toni has told us something… We believe him. It is unacceptable.”
Gustavo Cabral, the accused Pachuca defender, has denied using any racial slurs. However, he admitted to insulting Rudiger by calling him a “fucking coward,” claiming this phrase is commonly used in Argentina. Cabral explained the altercation arose from a collision where Rudiger accused him of hitting him with his hand, leading to the heated argument.
Coach Lozono added that while he did not witness the incident himself, he intends to speak with Cabral about it. He also asserted that such behavior was unprecedented among his Pachuca players.
Reports from sources such as The Athletic indicate that Antonio Rudiger`s representatives firmly stand by his claim that the language used against him was indeed racist.
