Alex Ovechkin Focused on the Season, Decision to Come Later
The future of Washington Capitals’ all-time leading goal scorer, Alex Ovechkin, remains uncertain. Despite an early season misstep, Ovechkin has not indicated whether the 2025-26 season will mark his final year in the NHL.
Ovechkin is currently playing the final year of a five-year, $47.5 million contract, which he signed on July 27, 2021, making him a pending unrestricted free agent. This season, in 68 games, he has accumulated 51 points (24 goals, 27 assists). While he has shown flashes of his scoring prowess, his performance has been inconsistent at times. Similar to Evgeni Malkin of the Pittsburgh Penguins, Ovechkin will be afforded ample time to deliberate his future.
The recent trade of John Carlson from the Capitals to the Anaheim Ducks has undoubtedly given Ovechkin much to consider. He acknowledged to Tom Gulitti of NHL.com post-trade deadline that the move had an impact on him, but he is unsure if it will influence his decision regarding continuing his career.
“I don’t know,” Ovechkin said regarding his future. “I’m still here, so we’ll see. We’ll see what’s going to happen, but, yeah, it’s a hard one.”
Washington Capitals General Manager Chris Patrick confirmed on NHL Network’s “First Shift” that Alex Ovechkin’s future with the team is entirely his decision, maintaining the current “status quo.” Patrick explained that Ovechkin is focused on the current season and getting the team into the playoffs. He plans to engage in discussions with his family, Ted Leonsis, Brian MacLellan, and Patrick himself before making a choice. The organization is respecting his process and waiting for him to be ready.
This sentiment echoes a similar one Patrick expressed following the March 6th trade deadline. At that time, Patrick stated he would speak with Ovechkin to allow him to express his feelings if needed. He observed that Ovechkin remains intensely focused on his team, his teammates, playing games, and striving for victory, a dedication that has been consistent throughout the season.
With the Washington Capitals currently battling for a playoff spot, all attention will undoubtedly turn to Alex Ovechkin once the current season concludes and his decision looms.
